Legend:
CH = chain
SC = single crochet
HDC = half double crochet
DC = double crochet
SL ST = slip stitch

Special Stitches:

Picot is a decorative stitch. To create a Picot you chain 3, then SL ST in the first CH of the CH 3 just made.

Pattern:

Loosely CH 5. Join with slip stitch in first chain to form a ring.

Row 1: CH 2. *HDC in ring, CH 1. Repeat from * 7 times, for a total of 8 HDC and CH 1 spaces. Join with SL ST in top of first HDC.

Row 2: SL ST into first CH 1 space. CH 2. *HDC 2, CH 2, HDC 2 in CH 1 space (shell made). Repeat from *7 times (8 shells). Join with SL ST in top of first HDC.

Row 3: SL ST in next HDC and into CH 2 space. CH 2. *(HDC 4, Picot (see above), HDC 4) in CH 2 space. SL ST in next space between shells of last row. Repeat from * once. (Two back wings complete.)

**(SC 1, HDC 1, DC 2, Picot, DC2, HDC 1, SC 1) in CH 2 space. SL ST in next space between shells of last row. Repeat from ** once. (Two front wings complete.)

Work two more back wings then two more front wings in the remaining CH 2 spaces. SL ST in first HDC of Row 3.  Finish off ends.

Body and Antennae: Fold Butterfly in half between two front wings on each side. Fold a piece of yarn in half, then wrap around butterfly at center of wings for body, pull ends through the folded part to secure body. With one of the two strings *CH 7, SL ST in 2nd CH from hook, CH 1, HDC in same CH, SL ST in next CH (end of antenna completed). Repeat from * with the second string. Finish off ends.

I stiffen these with Stiffy (found near the Mod Podge in craft stores). Just use a sponge brush, apply to both sides and allow to dry.
